If you've scrolled past "mushroom coffee" in your feed and wondered whether it's a wellness trend worth trying or just coffee with a gimmick bolted on, you're asking the right question. The short answer: it depends entirely on what's actually in the bag. Some mushroom coffees cut the real coffee content way down and bulk it out with mushroom powder. Others — like ours — keep the coffee exactly as it is and add a mushroom extract on top for a specific reason. Here's what actually changes when you switch, and what doesn't.
"Mushroom coffee" is a catch-all term, and it covers two pretty different products:
Powder-blend style: ground coffee is diluted with a high ratio of powdered mushroom (often cheaper varieties), which lowers the caffeine per cup and changes the flavour — sometimes with an earthy, mushroomy edge that needs masking.
Extract-added style: full-strength coffee stays full-strength, and a concentrated mushroom extract is added on top, chosen for a specific functional reason rather than as a caffeine-cutting filler.
Brewdy's mushroom coffees — The Fun-Gai and our Lion's Mane Ground Coffee — are the second kind. Both start with real Colombian Arabica (full-bodied, properly roasted) and add organic Lion's Mane mushroom extract into the mix. Nothing about the base coffee is watered down, and neither product is formulated to taste "mushroomy" — Lion's Mane extract is naturally mild, so what you taste is coffee.
Of the dozens of mushrooms used in food and supplements, Lion's Mane is the one most associated with focus and mental clarity, which is why it's the one we chose to build a coffee around rather than, say, reishi (more associated with relaxation) or chaga (more of an antioxidant play). It's been used traditionally for cognitive wellbeing for a long time, and it's become a go-to in the nootropic and functional-food space for people who want their coffee to pull a little double duty: the usual lift from caffeine, plus a mushroom extract that's specifically associated with staying switched on rather than wired.
That's a genuinely different pitch to regular coffee. A straight cup like our Fundamental Blend or Zulu Beans is about flavour and energy — a three-origin balanced cup, or a bold high-caffeine dark roast. There's nothing wrong with wanting exactly that. Mushroom coffee is for the days you want the ritual and the energy, plus something aimed at how clear-headed that energy feels.
This is where we'll be straight with you: Lion's Mane has a long history of traditional use for focus and cognitive wellbeing, and it's a genuinely popular ingredient in the wellness space for exactly that reason — but we're not going to claim it's clinically proven to sharpen your focus, because robust, large-scale human research on it is still thin on the ground. What we can say honestly is what's actually in the cup: real organic Lion's Mane extract, not a trace amount, blended into coffee that still tastes like coffee. Whether you notice a difference is genuinely personal — plenty of people report feeling clearer and steadier rather than the jittery edge they get from caffeine alone, but that's subjective, not a guarantee.
If you're mushroom-coffee-curious but not ready to commit to a full bag, that's a completely reasonable way to find out where you land.
Here's the practical difference, cup for cup:
Caffeine: no change. Our mushroom coffees use the same real coffee base as our regular range — we're not cutting caffeine with filler. If you're caffeine-sensitive, mushroom coffee from us isn't a way to dial it down; you'd want a decaf for that.
Taste: barely any change. Lion's Mane extract doesn't bring the earthy mushroom flavour some people associate with the category. The Fun-Gai and Lion's Mane Ground Coffee are both built to taste like good coffee first.
What's added: this is the real difference. You're getting organic Lion's Mane extract on top of your usual cup, plus — in The Fun-Gai specifically — turmeric, MCT oil, and grass-fed bovine collagen as well, making it a more rounded functional blend rather than a single-ingredient swap.
Format: The Fun-Gai is an instant blend (100g or 200g), while Lion's Mane Ground Coffee is a cafe-style ground roast for your espresso machine, plunger, or pour-over — so the format decision is really about how you brew, not about the mushroom.
Lion's Mane is widely considered well-tolerated by most healthy adults, but a couple of things are worth flagging honestly. If you have a known allergy to mushrooms or fungi, mushroom coffee isn't for you — skip it and stick with a regular blend. And if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, on medication, or managing a health condition, it's worth a quick chat with your doctor before adding any new supplement-style ingredient to your routine, mushroom extract included.
One more practical note if you're choosing between our two mushroom coffees specifically: The Fun-Gai contains bovine collagen, so it isn't vegan. Our Lion's Mane Ground Coffee contains no collagen and is vegan-friendly, with nothing in it beyond organic ground coffee and the Lion's Mane extract itself — so if plant-based matters to you, that's the one to reach for.
Does mushroom coffee taste like mushrooms?
Not with Lion's Mane extract, which is naturally mild. Both The Fun-Gai and Lion's Mane Ground Coffee are built to taste like quality coffee, not like soup.
Does mushroom coffee have less caffeine than regular coffee?
Not ours. We use the same real coffee base as our regular range — caffeine isn't reduced. Some other brands cut caffeine by diluting with mushroom powder; that's a different style of product to what we make.
Can I drink mushroom coffee every day?
Most people drink it the same way they'd drink regular coffee — as part of a normal daily routine. If you're new to Lion's Mane, it's reasonable to start with one cup a day and see how you go.
Is mushroom coffee vegan?
Our Lion's Mane Ground Coffee is. The Fun-Gai isn't, because it also contains bovine collagen.
Which should I try first, The Fun-Gai or Lion's Mane Ground Coffee?
If you want an instant option and don't mind collagen, turmeric, and MCT oil along for the ride, go The Fun-Gai. If you brew (espresso, plunger, pour-over) and want a simpler, vegan-friendly option that's just coffee plus Lion's Mane, go Lion's Mane Ground Coffee.
Is Lion's Mane coffee keto-friendly?
Yes — both The Fun-Gai and Lion's Mane Ground Coffee fit a keto routine.
